WARRIORS RETURN
Feb18, Panmure
The night, a great boxing success with outstanding results in both the Amateur and Professional arenas. A well behaved packed stadium (a new stadium to boxing AND in the Panmure main centre}. Both Ams and Pro officials worked well on the night and the refereeing was supperb. The door guard and ring girls, glove attendants and tea girls worked like a team. The food and service to the tables was impeccable. WE MADE SOME MEMORIES WE CREATED SOME HISTORY. The Shamrock star shined on Feb 18 at Panmure, the feedback is all positive.
Mixed results for Shamrock amateurs with Yadana Sai in the 1st bout coming in a little under done to lose by split decision to Mateake of ABA.. An exhibition with Shamrock Ross Puru and Eric Finau gave Ross some valuable ringtime in his 1st outing. Christine Small put up a brave performance to lose to more experienced Shamrock fighter Siona Fernandez campaigning for the worlds. Shamrock Matt Adams won his 1st boxing fight unanimously against a tenacious Frank Masoe, well done Matt. Sosefo Falekaono beat James Thompson unamous points. Nipha Jones lost to Kahu Bentson after knocking Kahu down in the 1st only to be koed sensationally in the 3rd.. Australian nbr 2 middleweight Kaye Scott did well in round 1 in her 4 rd fight only to be chopped down by the relentless Shamrock Hurricane Doyle in the next three, Hurricane winning the international unanimously proving top of the middleweights in Oceania.
The pros started out with heavyweight Indian fighter Rohit Singh sustaining a torn knee ligament 30secs into his bout with Anmol Tiger and was ruled no contest.
Gunnar Jackson brawled it with supermiddleweight Peter Tovi'o in the 1st to take the fight out by TKO in the 2nd.
Shamrock heavyweight *King* Afa Tatupu punched it out in a rematch with Jnr Iakopo in bout three to win a power punching crowd pleaser over 4rds and dominating Iakopo in the last. Both men had improved from their 1st fight won by Tatupu on the David Tua undercard by TKO rd2. The *King* paced himself better than in previous fights and Iakopo was coming off draws with big men Clarence Tillman and Paula Mataele. The bout was described by NZPBA President Pat Leonard as a mini 'Frazier - Foreman' punchout. Look for King Afa on the May 19 promotion again in Panmure..
Also featuring under the Shamrock umbrella and in the main bout of the evening was Lgt welterweight NZ sensation Santos Pakau trained by his father BJ and residing in the USA here on a short visit to face tough Samoan campaigner Oli Filimaua over 8rds. The fight started evenly with Oli able to counter Santos's left - right left body rip with his own short hook and speed right hand, Oli's hook remained relevant in the 2nd round until Pakau delivered then moved negating Filimaua's counter. Rounds 3 - 4 saw the very professional work in Santos Pakau breaking down Filimaua with combination head to the body shots and stepping in a brilliant display of boxing to stop Filimaua 53seconds round five. Santos showed his experience in a very professional display of boxing seldom seen in NZ and by a New Zealander. Watch out also for Santos Pakau on the May19 card. Ups to all their family who most trained out of the Shamrock some years ago and now back again. Without God's blessings the positives are not possible.

A Shamrock Promotion
Friday 18 November, 2011
Another kiwi boxer-one who beat adult men while still a boy - is returning to Auckland to fight in February after living and fighting in the United States for many years. Santos 'The Maori Warrior' Pakau who was trained by his father BJ Pakau at Onehunga's former Pakaurangi family boxing gym, turned professional at the tender age of 16 as he'd already been beating adults in the amateurs. He won 25 straight pro fights and claimed the NZ lightweight title before seeking his fortunes in the United States in a seven-year sojourn. But the boxer who showed so much poise and potential in his early days had an uphill battle overseas. Pakua struggled financially and had a journyman's career in the States (often taking bouts at short notice) before settling down and marrying there. He travels to New Zealand in February with his wife Ana and will contest a pro bout at Ron Foley's Shamrock Boxing gym's February 18 promotion. Foley says he has to seek an Australian opponent as there is nobody in New Zealand of Santo's calibre. He was horrified at the "deep end" mismatches Santos endured in the US, saying his first fight there was against three time champion knockout king Randall Bailey. BJ says the later stages of Santos' career has been marked by problems with promoters and contracts. He says parents and coaches should be wary of who they deal with. BJ says Santos has come full circle, back to Ron Foley who coached him in his amateur career. Written by Julian Slade. (TRUTH_WEEKENDER).

Change at Shamrock
Monday 12 September, 2011
This period saw change at Shamrock Gym with a decline of amateur boxer numbers with new clubs developing their hiatus in the Eastside Panmure area and Corporate promotions becoming popular. Hurricane Doyle brought joy to the Assn however winning her National middleweight title ChristChurch NZ Champs, Siona Frenandez also highlighted winning her international at Arafura with the Silver medal in the flyweight division.
Professional boxing made its prominence felt through *Afa Tatupu, *Filipo Fonoti Masoe, *Eric Fuimaono Hunt and *Aung Sanda in this period also as in Fightnight at ABA Stadium on February28 when Eric Fuimaono Hunt in the first pro fight of the evening did well to beat Ben Naqasima by KO early in the 2nd rd despite being incapacitated with his right shoulder dislocated for the best half of round one, Dr Dave Renata popped Eric's shoulder back at the break, Eric has subsequently undergone successful shoulder surgery. Then at Judgement Day 1 at ASB Stadium March4 where *Filipo Fonoti Masoe defeated Atalili Fai over 4rds and *Afa Tatupu stopping Ronnie Vaasa in 2.. March19 had *Tatupu defeat Junior Lakopo also in 2 rounds on the Tua/King undercard at Telstra Stadium. Tahiti on May7 at Papeete Stadium got it all wrong with the scoring when they announced New Zealanders losers in all their bouts including *King Afa Tatupu/Temoo Temaititahio, *Filipo Fonoti Masoe/Terii Niufau and *Aung Sanda/Karihi Tehei. However, they got the decision right at the ABA Stadium on June17 when *King Afa Tatupu KOed Lightning Lupe in round 1 at Judgement Day2, promoted by Bruce Glozier. August13 at Telstra Stadiums Tua/Barret undercard saw lightweight *Aung Sanda stopped in 3 by Wellington's Scott Gardner and *King Afa TKOed in 4 by bigman Joey Wilson. These two bouts marginally controversial with the 8 count rule deleted at last moment to suit the timing of the programme. Tatupu immediately back on his feet after being knocked down with exhaustion was declined the right to continue with 15seconds left on the clock.
New Coach Josiah Mataele and wife Ngalu, two children Joshua and Charlotte joined Shamrock Gym in July and have injected enthusiasm and impetus into the amateur boxers not seen in awhile. Sticking to successful and specific Shamrock coaching methods Josiah has brought his own style of coaching to add to the basics which has already culminated in a win for Shamrock at Pakuranga on September3. Joshua Mataele combined with Siona Fernandez and Hurricane Doyle have been nominated to represent SBA and compete at NZ national champs in Upper Hutt in October. Head Coach Chris Martin and wife Gwen will minister the nationals squad with Josiah Mataele as assistant. SBA President Jim Johnstone will represent the assn at the BoxingNZ AGM.

AUG13 UNDERCARD...
Tuesday 16 August, 2011
Aung Sanda Vs Scott Gardner...
As a starting point without excuses lets realize the mammoth task in front of our 'little man' on the evening of the great undercard fight.. Gardner with heaps more amateur fights with overseas experience, lets be fair, Gardner was included in NZ boxing squads for three seasons and was already 2 nil, 2 ko, in his already started pro career. Aung had no such experience and really did not handle pressure well coming up to the fight, however, all things equal he did exceptionally well and boxed clever for two quality rounds.. Gardners pressure was catching up to Aung in the third and he knows he needs to learn how to handle an aggressive fighter on the ropes..The call by the ref was a tad early after three clean shots but in retrospect it was the right call! Aung is refreshed in his mind and is ready to tackle the changes he must make in a pro career. Point of interest here is that in both these matchups our hand was tied by the promoter, do it, or dip out! That was both fights, I backed off Afa/Wilson fight 3 times and was given the ulitimatum!!!
King Afa Tatupu Vs Joey Wilson...
Like it or not Joey Wilson had all the advantages in this one, 6'6" tall against Afas 6' clear, Joey 116.5kg against Afas 100 clear, fight experience....just come off a win against American Clarence Tillman who weighs 137kgs for that one, what sort of amateur record Joey clock up in balance to Afas? pro stats Wilson already boxed 43rds to Afas 9rds in the ring. Yes Afa was instructed to not be in Wilsons range, be right out of it or inside it, and when he was inside it go to work on the body then up to the head... Afa did all that to the best of his ability and strengths of a novice pro and to my mind executed his portion quite well except for too much effort to get a job done too fast in what we expected him to do, ko Joey Wilson... Sometimes fighters get into the fighters fog in the course of battle and don't get to execute the shots we can see from the outside, look what happened to David Tua!!! Afa may have done this and may have done that, every man and his dog has the answer when theyre not in the shoes of fighter or coach, Afa Tatupu did what he did, both he and his corner will learn from the experience, there is no perfect fighter and no perfect coach, if a fighter is not happy he takes himself off to a coach that might make the difference...King Afa Tatupu fought his heart out rightfully or wrongfully on Saturday night trying to defeat a giant against the odds...Joey Wilson was tougher than expected, but one things for certain, King Afa will always be King and learn from this defeat and will come back a better fighter through it all because as the crowd on the night applauded he was the peoples champion with the heart of a lion.
From a coaches perspective, far easier to coach a good big guy to win a fight over a good small guy. If you don't believe it, try stepping into the ring with Joey Wilson who has similarities to the Klit bros whom no one can topple. The promoters have contacted me this morning and state that Afa now has a huge fanbase, and have cemented his and Sanders inclusion in the next event but at my choice of opponent.

“This great undercard provides these young fighters in NZ and the Pacific the best opportunity to showcase their talent domestically and around the world. Something I never had. It is that such a strong undercard and I am happy it has become a reality!”

Tua/King undercard - Telstra Centre Manakau, Saturday 19/3/11
Monday 28 March, 2011
King Afa versus Junior Lakopo
In certainly the most dramatic fight of the night, Afa Tatupu battered Junior Iakopo until the referee called a halt to the action in the second round. King Afa asserted his strength early, as he was able to drop his foe with the first hard combination he threw. Iakopo wasn't about to take this sitting down (literally and figuratively) as he came back to hurt Tatupu with looping shots. The rest of the opening round played out like a group of kids with fireworks: many explosions and a high chance of someone being seriously hurt. This would prove to be the case in the second, as Tatupu punched in sustained combination while Iakopo threw hard singles. With Tatupu still pressing, and Iakopo not offering any resistance, the man in the middle wisely called a halt to the entertainment.
King Afa fights next on May5 in Tahiti against the Tahitian HW amateur champion in his pro debut.

ASB Stadium, Kohimarama Friday, March4
Friday 11 March, 2011
Filipo Fonoti came in first in his 3rd pro fight against experienced campaigner Atalili Fai of Wellington. Fonoti started tentatively in round 1 and got caught early by a big right hand from Fai, wobbled and shaken Fonoti showed the where-it-all to tie up then tie up again to let his head clear before easily outpointing the veteran Fai over the 4x3minute rounds. Always the exciting spectacle of the 1st round big shot from Fai and the possibility of him connecting again. Another good win to Fonoti and learning curve as he goes forward.
King Afa Tatupu stepped up next for Shamrock fighting out of the red corner, in the other corner was tough newcomer Auckland based Ronnie Vaasa. Vaasa fancied his chances and initially carried the fight to the lighter Tatupu, as the the round progressed and Tatupu's power and body punching became effective, Vaasa began to pick his shots with some success but Tatupu was unfazed. Round 2 and Tatupu was concerned the guy is staying upright brought a sustained attack with tremendous body shots before connecting to the head to force Vaasa to quit 2.59mins of the round but still on his feet. A good win to the King as he progresses and adapting to new opponents.
...............................................................................................
King Afa is scheduled to fight Mokai Paraha at Manakau's Telstra Stadium on the David Tua undercard March19.
The Shamrock professional team is also contracted to fight in Tahiti on May5.

King Afa
Monday 28 February, 2011
King Afa Tatupu in his 1st Pro fight easily defeated Vai Toevai In what was scheduled for a 4x3mins bout it took approximately two minutes of the 1st round for King Afa to halt proceedings. The King dropped Toevai 3 times to get the fight waved off. Afa caught Toevai with clean solid punches in the 1st stanza and Toevai went into panic mode, only to be caught again and sent to the canvas with educated power punching., the 3rd stanza had Toevai attempting to hold but King Afa suckered him to a right uppercut left hook combo to effectively end his evening at the stadium. Afa did well in his pro debut with the 1st round stoppage when it took experienced pros Monty Betham 6rds. Dominic Vea 2rds, Mark De Mori 3rds and Alex Leapai could only manage a UD over 4rds. Afa's corner: Ron Foley, Hayden Heta and Chris Martin.

SHAMROCK PROMOTION
Monday 28 February, 2011
A great night of boxing for both Amateurs and Pros at this event subtitled *HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHTNIGHT*, although the attendance was below par the fighters performed magnificently as did ring MC Manuera Riwai from Far North Shamrock Boxing Academy. Manuera's performance was brilliant in his first assignment for Shamrock Boxing Promotions. The evening proved a mixed bag for the Shamrock Gym however, with TOA APIATA'S opponents registration not up to scratch ndpreventing that fight from taking place. But other results were: AUNG SANDA marginally outpointed by National champ Angus Donaldson.
a very good technical fight where Sanda needed to be a little sharper but shaping well for the National Champs in September.
ERIC FUIMAONO HUNT in the first pro fight of the evening did well to beat Ben Naqasima by KO early in the 2nd rd despite being incapacitated with his right shoulder dislocated for the best half of round one. Naqasima was down once in the first round but came on strongly to capitalize on the injury. Dr Dave Renata popped Eric's shoulder back at the break. AFA TATUPU suffered his first defeat against banger and veteran Junior Pati in a one round slug fest. Although putting Pati down King Afa was unable to finish and walked onto a huge overhand right and after the subsequent 8 count was put down again for the full count. A grim learning curve for this promising professional whom we all know will be stronger for the experience. *God builds His people after they are humbled.* Joey Wilson from out west did a great job in fending off American Clarence Tillman in the final fight of the evening. Bigman Tillman got desperate after the first round and attempted to out muscle the lighter Wilson, but Wilson used good footwork and a fine jab to win the 6 rounder by split decision.

New Recruits
Monday 28 February, 2011
Fighters come and go to a large extent and we see that in most gyms. Shamrock however seems to hold its people not just because of the coaching staff but because of the atmosphere created by the participants who have made their home at the boxing facility. Personalities and Professional Heavyweights Afa Tatupu, Eric Fuimaono-Hunt, Filipo Fonoti, and impending member Clarence Tillman plus amateurs Kevin Meak, Kaleo Kaituii, Toa Apiata, Aung Sanda, Yadana Sai and Sovantha Meak all make the Shamrock a place of friendship and support and somewhere to go and enjoy each others company while training and preparing for competition as it comes. Coaches Hayden Heta, Vili Tuitupo and Taylor Wiki help make up the compliment of training expertise at the Shamrock coupled with Lisa Mauala and Jelaire Waetford who have terrific personalities for the Boxfit sessions as does Gail Foley at reception. The Shamrock Gym has become a place where the people are excited to go to and workout where training is enjoyable while maintaining good work ethics and specifics.

CLIMBING THE MOUNTAIN
Wednesday 27 July, 2011
Shamrock Professionals lightweight Aung Sanda and heavyweight King Afa Tatupu are set to face the sternest test in their careers when they fight on the undercard of David Tua and Monte Barret at Manukau's Telstra Stadium on August 13. Sanda will square off with Wellington's Scott Gardner in a 4x3mins contest with a 61.2 kg weight limit. While Scott Gardner had a very good international amateur career and starts this fight with a 2 wins by way of KO Pro career, Sander comes into his pro debut.
*King* Afa Tatupu will climb into the ring to face giant Joey Wilson of West Auckland with a height of 6'6" a 20kg and reach advantage and a record of 10 fights - 8 wins, 3 by way of KO and boxed 41 rds in total. King Afa comes in with a record of 7 fights - 6 wins by way of KO with 1 loss. boxed 9 rounds in total.
Those are the stats and the odds are on with hard fights for both lads, which brings us to the old axiom *RISKS ARE A PRIVILEDGE* Not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

Tahiti May 7 - heart to heart
Monday 09 May, 2011
Arrival time in late evening Thursday May5 and host Rodrigue Ah Min and wife pulled out all the stops in a full Tahitian welcome starting with rapid process of entry pass then Tahitian hula dancing in a process that involved all members of our group, a fantastic experience as with the graciousness of the Ah Mins at departure time 4AM Sunday morning.
The Saturday fight night drew a huge Polynesian crowd to support the local fighters and the pre-fight introduction with official welcome and protocol was tremendous with Tahitian fighters dressed in traditional warrior regalia and a heart to heart face off.
King Afa Tatupu and Temoo Temaititahio began proceedings in a heavyweight bout, Temoo with a weight advantage of of 5+kgs. The bout started evenly as King Afa stalked his rival with an educated left jab, a minute in and proceedings became more serious when Afa connected with a nice left hook initiating a power test with the King getting the best of the exchanges. The second round began more vigorously with big shots going in and Afa still outworking Temoo in every exchange but the fighters were well instructed to control the range and the tempo, it was a very hot night. Temoo turned out to be a very tough warrior with a chin of granite and was clearly rocked on two occasions in the third round. The fourth round saw King Afa at his best in control of the ring and outworking the Tahitian in every phase . King Afa a clear winner in this 4 round contest throwing 30% more power shots overall in his best performance.
Aung Sanda and Karihi Tehei went into it in bout two of the internationals. Tehei a very talented lightweight Tahitian champion and a gifted southpaw stretched Sandas skills and all the preparation he had put into getting ready for this fight. Once again in Aungs career he was faced with an opponent who seemingly produced more power punch delivery than his own, regardless to say Sandas speed and punch combination proved superior. Teheis southpaw style was a little upsetting but Sanda managed to keep away from the power left and fought a great fight overt three rounds which is meant to signal the end of his amateur career. This fight was a toss up between power shots and skillful boxing and could very well have been a draw if not favourable to the Burmese Aung Sanda.
Filipo Fonoti Masoe VS Terii Niufau - MAIN EVENT
Main event of the occasion saw cruiserweight Filipo Fonoti Masoe stepped into the ring against pride of Tahiti Terii Niufau whose fight record paled that of Filipo in near forty bouts. This stanza began with Filipo gaining the range control and maintaining it with a crisp left hand that kept the skilled Tahitian Terii resorting to body attacks with heavy hands. The second round began a little more vigorously with Niufau closing the gap and doing nice work to the body and the head with Fonoti unfazed and showing good technique with uppercuts and turning his opponent. The third round had Fonoti doing great work again in controlling the distance and displaying punch rate, speed and flashes of brilliance against a very formidable and pressing opponent. The fourth round had two fighters desperate to outwork the other and again solid shots going in from Filipo once more, the fight ending with Filipo backed on the ropes antagonizing Niufau making faces and poking out his tongue to the delight of a packed stadium. Again an obvious win to the Samoan Filipo Fonoti Masoe an ever improving campaigner..
The shock of the event was the decisions going against all three three NZ competitors. When the decision was announced against Afa in the first fight I returned to the dressing room and informed Sanda and Fonoti there were going to be no wins outside of a KO.
The Tahitian crowd voiced concern at the results, and one official suggested I make a formal complaint to the governing bodies concerning the blatant cheating in this tournament and hopefully help to wipe out the cheating in Tahitian boxing which he described as prevalent for many years.
